Mrs. Brahmstedt’s Kindernews #5 Books, Reading to/with
Children,
and Book Orders
One of the best gifts any parent can give a child is the love of
good books and the joy and benefit of reading. Children who read at
home, or are read to, have a head start on reading success at
school.
Here are some ideas for building great readers:
Read with your child. Find a quiet, comfortable place to read with
your child at a special time each day. Just 20 minutes of reading a
day is all you need to get started.
Talk about books together. Let talking about books come naturally
from both you and your child. Don’t’ stop and ask questions about
the story on every page. Instead, follow your child’s lead.
Anything a child has to say about the book is important. There are
no right or wrong ideas. Reading should be an enjoyable time for
you both, not a question and answer session.
Make reading fun! It isn’t so much what you read with your child,
but that you spend time doing it. Show your child that reading is
meaningful by reading cereal boxes at breakfast, pointing out signs
like “Stop” and “One Way” while driving, or sharing letters and
magazines that you receive at home.

What Difference Can 30 Minutes of Reading Aloud Make?
Hours of reading books by age 5:
30 minutes daily = 900 Hours
30 minutes weekly = 130 Hours
Less than 30 minutes weekly = 60 Hours or less
From time to time, I send home flyers filled with books of good
quality. I try to choose a company that has the best collection of
books, as well as the most reasonable prices. If you wish to have
your child order any of the books, complete the order blank and
send it back to school, with a check made out to the book company.
The company I use most is: Scholastic Book Clubs. As with any money
sent to school, it is safer if you put money in an envelope with
your child’s name and my name on the outside. It takes the book
companies about two or three weeks to send the books to us. Please
note the return date on the order blank, so I will be able to
include your child’s choice of books with the order.
