Kindernews #4 for 2009-2010

Mrs. Brahmstedt’s Kindernews #4 -- 2009-2010 –Reading Souvenirs +
From time to time, I am going to be giving my kindergarten students a
small souvenir, after reading some of our books. They will work as a reminder
of some of the information they have learned and help them retell the story they
have heard. The children will be keeping the souvenirs in small draw-string
fabric “souvenir bags” with name tags attached to them. These “souvenir bags”
should remain IN your child’s backpack and travel back and forth with him/her
each day. When a new souvenir is in the bag, ask your child to tell you about
the story/information that goes with it. This activity will help your child
remember the story or information, as well as help him/her verbally practice the
strategy of summarizing/concluding. Return all the souvenirs to the “souvenir
bag,” so they can be enjoyed often, please.
The first souvenir your child is bringing home is a button. We read the
book, The Button Box by Margarette S. Reid to reinforce the name and sound
of the letter Bb. Ask questions to get your child to tell you about the story and
discuss the name and sound of Bb.
Thank you for your support of this language arts activity, through asking
questions about the stories.

** If you go to the school web site at www.avonschools.us, you can find all the Kindernews letters. Go to the home page, click on Elementary School, click on Staff, then my name.
Thanks again,
Mrs. B.
