Mrs. Brahmstedt’s Kindernews #3 2009-2010
1. EACH MORNING, WE RECTIE OUR SCHOOL’S PLEDGE FOR
SUCCESS, as a group to help the students of our school become
better
citizens, by using their self-control to treat others kindly and
fairly,
working hard to do their best, being responsible, respectful,
caring and
honest. In addition, the pledge reminds our students that they
have
many people who care about them, and that they are GOOD people . .
.
they just follow the rules better and make more wise choices at
some
times than at others. J These are the words they say:
“On my honor, I promise to be the best that I can be. I will do
what is expected. I will treat others kindly and fairly. I will
work
to be responsible, respectful, caring, and honest. This is my
pledge . . . because I am a good, intelligent, and peaceful
person,
and I have people in my family, school, and community who care
about me!”
Helping your child to understand and memorize this pledge would
be
helpful to his/her being better able to make good choices. Thanks!
J
This pledge coordinates well with the “Lesson One: The ABCs of
Life” and
the Second Step programs we are using in our classroom. It will
also coordinate with the Olweus anti-bullying program we will use
this year.

3. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO HELP YOUR CHILD with activities/skills at
home
some suggestions are: practicing letter names, sounds, and rhyming,
writing
first names [Have your child use a CAPITAL letter for ONLY the
FIRST letter of
his/her name, please.], drawing and coloring inside the lines,
[Encourage you
child to hold a pencil or crayon between the index finger and the
thumb and
have all three other fingers under the pencil or crayon as a
“resting pillow.”],
cutting, and practicing the sounds that make up words they want to
write or
read. One of the best activities for parents and children is the
sharing of a
picture book. Talking about the story after it is read is also
quite valuable.
(Working time should be only 15 to 20 min.)
4. PAPERS WITH “HAD HELP” marked on them are papers that were
completed
with me, another adult, or a WIU or high school student-helper, due
to the child’s having difficulty with the concept being taught or
practiced. These would be good concepts for you to practice at
home, too. J
5. A CIRCLE around a letter, a numeral or a name means it is a GOOD
one.
[It is a Smiley without the face. J]
6. KINDERGARTEN GRADES are different than the grades given to
most
other students. A Star = Excellent
A Smiley = Good
OK = Average
A check = Needs to improve
7. INDIVIDUAL PROGRESS REPORTS will be sent home in October,
January, March and May. [See the attached copy of our report card
to become familiar with the skills that will be evaluated at
different times during the year.]
8. PERSONAL CONFERENCES are scheduled in October and January.
However, you may request a conference at any time by contacting me
at
(309) 465-3851 to set up an appointment. [My extension is
#241.]
9. PARTY CHOICES were made by some parents at the “Meet the Teacher
Night.”
We will be having three holiday parties throughout the school year.
We will need
7 or 8 families to help with each party. Fill in and return the
bottom part of this sheet by marking a 1 or a 2 next to your first
and second choices, please, only if you did not already sign up,
when you were here. Thanks.
